Risks of Importing Storage RacksSteve Cappella
The U.S. pallet racking industry has many new offshore competitors since recent RMI (Rack Manufacturers Institute) approvals have created a path for pallet racking dumping into America.
Free enterprise is great, however, a lower price doesn’t always lead to lower costs.
Many offshore pallet rack suppliers offer roll formed opened column uprights with bolted diagonal cross bracing.
This type of upright frame design especially in a seismic or impact condition, can allow for the columns to twist due to orientation of the cross brace, small diameter fasteners and large open back column design. Once the column twists, the frames can potentially collapse creating a domino effect.
Other purchasing decisions to consider are the risks of offshore material validation including; tensile strength, steel thickness and the potential of paint toxins such as lead.
